What Is a Rack Mount Power Supply (and How Does It Work)?

A rack mount power supply is a DC power source housed in a standardized chassis (typically 2U 2U, 3U, 4U, or 6U) designed for installation in 19” equipment racks. These power supplies offer the same functionality as benchtop units—voltage/current control, measurement accuracy, protection features—but with added scalability and integration features for system-level applications.

Key traits include:

  1. Standardized Mounting – Fits rack rails for secure system integration
  2. Remote Operation – Control via USB, or LAN
  3. Stackable Output – Scalable power through series/parallel configurations
  4. Cooling Optimization – Airflow design for dense rack environments

Rack Mount vs. Benchtop Power Supplies: Side-by-Side Comparison

Feature Rack Mount Power Supply Benchtop Power Supply
Form Factor 2U/3U rack-mounted Freestanding unit
Ideal Use Case Automated test systems (ATE, EV) Lab experiments, prototyping
Remote Interfaces USB, LAN, GPIB, RS-232 Often includes same interfaces
Scalability Easily daisy-chained or stacked Less modular
Portability Fixed installation Portable, standalone
Space Efficiency High – no bench footprint Requires benchtop space

Eliminate Power Delivery Challenges in Automated Test Systems

Simulate Real-World EV Load Conditions

Need to emulate charging, regen, or transient failures? Program dynamic voltage/current sweeps with autoranging output and energy recovery. No external load banks or switching required.

Integrate Seamlessly into ATE Racks

Stop wrestling with benchtop workarounds. These supplies mount directly into your 19” rack, support SCPI and LabVIEW, and give you full remote programmability—so you can focus on test logic, not hardware hacks.

Keep EMI Low in Defense & Aerospace Testing

Need to emulate charging, regen, or transient failures? Program dynamic voltage/current sweeps with autoranging output and energy recovery. No external load banks or switching required.

Run Long-Duration Burn-In Without Failures

Tired of thermal drift or shutdowns mid-test? Get stable, accurate power with rack-grade thermal performance designed for continuous semiconductor validation and wafer-level stress tests.

Maximize Rack Density Without Sacrificing Control

Running out of space? These 2U and 3U units stack easily and deliver multi-kilowatt output. Scale power per DUT or per bay, without bulky wiring or benchtop sprawl.

Reduce Setup Time Across Shifting Test Requirements

You don’t have hours to reconfigure hardware for every new DUT. With built-in sequencing, waveform generation, and flexible autoranging, these supplies adapt fast—no need to swap units or manually tune output profiles.

Rack Mount Power Supply FAQs

What size rack are these power supplies compatible with?

Most rack mount power supplies conform to the 19” industry standard and range from 1U to 3U in height.

Can these supplies be controlled remotely in an automated setup?

Yes. Most models support remote communication protocols such as USB, GPIB, and Ethernet (LAN).

Are rack mount power supplies fan-cooled?

Yes, they are optimized for forced-air cooling with front-to-rear or side airflow, depending on the model. The 4U and 6U power supplies also have a water-cooling option.

What’s the main advantage of rack mounting?

It saves space, improves cable management, and enables integration into automated or production test environments.

What safety features are available?

Network and supply protection (NS) increases safety for regenerative systems when EA power systems are equipped with regenerative systems such as PUB, PSB, PUL or ELR. In the rack system, the NS protection from a well-known supplier monitors the grid for the feed-in of generation and regenerative plants.

The module acts on the fast stop chain and switches off the entire rack in the event of a mains fault. Islanding (disconnection of the power grid from the connection to the larger power grid) is prevented
